Leptospira sp and chronic kidney disease: A preliminary study of the serological status of a population of dialysis patients in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire

Abstract:

Background: Pathogenic strains of Leptospira are responsible for leptospirosis, a neglected zoonotic disease, whose pathophysiology involves acute kidney injury. These kidney lesions may progress to chronic forms, suggesting that leptospirosis could be a potential contributor to chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study aimed to determine the serological status related to leptospirosis in dialysis patients in Côte d’Ivoire. 

Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted from November 15 to December 15, 2024, at the Institut Pasteur de Côte d’Ivoire. It involved serum samples collected from dialysis patients in Abidjan. The presence of anti-Leptospira IgM and IgG antibodies was assessed using ELISA techniques, and data were analyzed using the Epi Info software.

Results: A total of 30 patients, predominantly males (sex ratio of 2), were included, with a mean age of 43.7 years. None of the patients tested positive for anti-Leptospira IgM or IgG antibodies.

Conclusion: The findings from this preliminary study suggest that leptospirosis likely plays a limited role in the burden of CKD cases in Côte d’Ivoire. However, given the relatively small sample size, these conclusions should be interpreted with caution. Further studies involving a larger population would be necessary to better assess potential links between leptospirosis and chronic kidney disease.
